There are many reasons to climb the career ladder. But, let’s be honest, one of the biggest incentives is a bigger pay packet.

The most significant salary increase usually comes from transitioning from a junior level to a more experienced role. And that’s exactly what the researchers from career.io decided to investigate in their latest study of pay raises across the USA. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they calculated the US states, cities, and job roles where stepping up leads to the largest pay rises.

Let’s take a close look at the results.

US states with the biggest pay rise for career climbers

Stepping up the career ladder in Florida leads to a bumper pay rise. The Sunshine State has the highest pay rise in this section of the study, with promoted workers bringing home an extra 35% per month.

Missouri and West Virginia are two more states where career climbers increase their average salary by over 30%.

Jobs in each state that come with the biggest pay rise after a promotion

Selling securities and commodities is a hard job. But toughing out those first few years will pay off in the long run, especially for those hungry sales agents working in Idaho. The career.io study reveals that stepping up from a junior to a senior commodities trader in Idaho equals a massive 156% pay rise. That’s life-changing stuff.

Biggest and smallest promotion pay rises in US metro areas

Florida makes another appearance at the top of the charts here. According to the data, Tallahassee City, Florida, is the US metro area where promoted workers see the biggest salary increase. On average, their pay packet rises by 43%.

That would make a lot of workers in Dayton, Ohio, green with jealousy. This metro area has one of the lowest average pay rises for experienced staff (23%).

Promotion pay rises in New York

An entry-level compliance officer for a New York firm can expect to make around $62,000 a year. But if they put in the hard work and step up to a more senior role, they can see a salary increase of 91%, effectively doubling their pay packet within just a few years.

Career climbing pay rises in Los Angeles

Education really does pay in Los Angeles. For example, career counselors working in the great city can increase their salary by 76% when landing a more senior role.

And there’s a big reason for preschool teachers to take on more responsibilities in the workplace. The study shows they can expect a pay bump of just under 60%.

Earn more for stepping up in Chicago

Chicago was an industrial powerhouse in the 19th and early 20th centuries. So it’s fitting that many of its biggest pay rises for more experienced staff are in ‘blue-collar’ roles. Assemblers and fabricators in Chicago earn 31% more after a promotion, while maintenance and repair workers see their pay rise by a quarter following a career move up the ladder.

But the Windy City’s white-collar workers still enjoy the biggest financial rewards. As part of their new remuneration package, promoted management analysts in Chicago receive a 65% pay rise.
