How to Get a Job at a Data Center

Data center employees are experts on nearly all things computer-related. These employees need to have all of the skills of an IT professional and more. Of course, they are compensated well for it. According to JobHero, the average data center employee makes about $60,000 a year. If you want to earn a job at a data center, check out the job skill and education requirements below to see if you have what it takes to make it in this fast-paced technological career.

College Degree or Related Experience

Not all data centers will require potential employees to have a college degree, but having one can improve your chances of getting hired. Data centers prefer their employees to have either an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in computer science, or a related field.

If you do not have a college degree, you still stand a chance of being hired by a data center if you have certificates or experience in a field related to computer science. One way to earn a certificate is to attend classes at a data center training firm. It can also be helpful to earn certificates in IT programs dealing with A+, CCNP, and similar programs.

Computer Operating System Experience

Having a practical knowledge of the inner workings of computer software is a vital skill to have if you want a job at a data center. Most people who have graduated high school should have a working knowledge of the programs in the Microsoft Office Suite, such as Word and Excel. However, a good data center employee will also have an understanding of the three primary operating systems: Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Hardware Repair Skills

Knowing how to repair computer hardware and fix other physical computer problems is another vital skill every data center employee should have. Even if the employee does not have to fix these problems themselves, they may need to explain to someone over the phone or a computer chat feature how to repair the problem.

Some common hardware skills a data center employee will need to have include basic repair skills for damaged computers, tablets, and smartphones. Working with network equipment, such as Wi-Fi routers is also an essential skill.

If you have a passion for all things computer-related and you have some experience in working with computers already, then you might be the perfect candidate to work at a date center. Make sure to highlight your computer-related education and certificates on your resume to increase the chance you will get hired. Good luck.
