Health is Wealth even for Remote Workers: Tips to Keep Healthy While Working At Home

A remote worker shared that she gained as much as 40 pounds within just a year working from home. Does this sound familiar to you? Working from home may have its advantages like flexible hours and being your own boss, but one of the struggles is to keep oneself healthy.

Here are some tips to help you choose a healthy lifestyle even when working from home.

Keep yourself physically healthy

Similar to an office job, remote workers also sit for the most part of the day.  Recent reports stated that sitting for too long is associated with a number of health concerns such as increased blood pressure, obesity, and high blood sugar.  Less sitting and more moving contributes to better health. Even standing every hour or two or taking a walk around your neighborhood will help. You could even set up an alarm on your phone to remind you if you’ve been sitting for a long time.  Standing desks are also becoming a popular option among workers even for those in an office setting and it’s something that you can also consider.

When you work at home, your lifestyle becomes more sedentary because everything is within your reach.  It is also easier to go to the kitchen and eat food without co-workers judging the amount you eat. But this time might actually be a good opportunity to try a diet because you can control the food you have in your kitchen and there are no co-workers that will tempt you to eat out during lunchtime. Take advantage of the situation and get on the right track by incorporating lazy keto meals into your daily routine, which involve eating food rich in fats and protein like such as avocado, eggs, plain Greek yogurt, and seafood.  Eating healthy can also be a part of your defense against the negative effects of sitting for hours.

Keep yourself mentally and emotionally healthy

If you’re a workaholic, then working at home would feel like you’ve hit the jackpot because you can spend the entire day working.  However, this situation can cause adverse effects on your mental health and also affect your efficiency as a worker. Taking mindfulness breaks is a great solution because it clears your mind and lets you become aware of the present.  Ultimately, it gives your brain a break from thinking, which has positive outcomes to your motivation and productivity levels.  A work-life balance is also helpful so that you won’t get burnout from working all day. Make sure that you have time for yourself.

You can also choose to just have everything delivered to your doorstep. This will also negatively affect your mental and emotional health as humans need to interact with one another.  During the day, you may consider working at co-working spaces to have face-to-face interaction with other people and to increase your network in your profession as well. Make lunch or dinner plans with family, friends, or even fellow remote workers in the area. Bonding with your loved ones has some benefits to your mental and emotional health.

Working at home gives you the freedom to do anything you want. Choose to keep yourself healthy because you are your greatest investment. If you are healthy, then you probably are happy, and if you’re happy and healthy, then you have all the wealth you need.

Thank you for sharing these great tips, Chantal!
We could easily say that work-life balance should be replaced by LIFE-WORK balance: life comes first, you come first, then work can get done.
We are human beings, not human doings. When we take care of ourselves, our bodies and brains work better, and we can serve others (family, friends, clients, colleagues, etc.) better
