Historically, women have been underrepresented in leadership roles. Luckily, roles are shifting and women are making great strides. Strong women in all industries are shattering the glass ceiling. So much so, that women-owned businesses in the U.S. have increased by 68%.
This rings true in government as well. While we have a long way to go, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is helping make history as the youngest woman to be elected into Congress. Even after being elected into Congress, Alexandria never strays from her humble upbringing.
She had made a name for herself through her determination to stick up for what she believes in with both class and realness. We’re also reminded that it’s okay to ask for help and no one’s perfect. “I keep things raw and honest…I believe public servants do a disservice to our communities by pretending to be perfect. It makes things harder for others who aspire to run someday if they think they have to be superhuman before they even try.”
Alexandria is not afraid to use fear as fuel: “I’ve used fear as a guiding light instead of a reason to turn off…Fear tells us how to grow. Fear, like a lot of discomfort, forces us to choose: ‘Do I do this, or not?’”
As a true role model and public servant, Alexandria has shown women all over the world what it means to be strong and powerful. Hola gathered 10 life lessons from AOC that are sure to inspire and motivate you to take a risk.
