8 Keys To Resiliency: The Reflex Resilience Book Review

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” Helen Keller

Does your life seem to put constant roadblocks in your way? Does your attempt to balance family, work, and relationships make you feel burnt out from sunrise to sunset? Author Zaheen Nanji understands where you’ve been, and how you can take action to move forward. I just finished reading her new book, The Resilience Reflex: 8 Keys to Transforming Barriers into Success in Life and Business, and it is helping me through a stressful time in my life, by providing me with the tools that I need to build up and improve my own resilience, and work through the struggles that I am facing, so that I don’t end up stuck in a rut. It is very easy to get caught up in the downward spiral of self pity and it takes a change in mindset to move forward.

What makes this book different from all the other self help books available? Zaheen doesn’t just tell you what you need to do to build more resilience – she shows you how. Her own struggles and stories are woven throughout and they allowed me to feel a deep connection and develop a better understanding of how to work through life’s setbacks. The applications and lessons in this book can apply to your personal life as well as your professional life. It is great for entrepreneurs, managers, CEOs, leaders of all kinds, students, and employees as it shows you how to build the necessary skills to achieve success at work and in your personal life.

There are some things that happen to us that are beyond our control. For example loss of a loved one, loss of property, accidents or other catastrophic events. Some people do NOT KNOW how to move past that event and continue being resilient – they feel STUCK.When things happen that are beyond our control we tend to ask “Why me?” Instead ask:”What did I learn from that experience?

In The Resilience Reflex, Zaheen explains the eight keys for resiliency and how you can reprogram new ways of finding solutions.

The Eight Keys For Resiliency that are explained in the book:

Emotional Intelligence

Learn the three steps to building emotional resilience; sensory intelligence, emotional intent and emotional management.

Reframe

Learn how to reprogram yourself to look for solutions rather than to dwell in the worry. And you will also learn the simple process of problem solving:

  1. Reset (applying the emotional resilience from the previous key)
  2. Reframe
  3. Apply Flexibility

Action

Learn about the 3 steps to taking action:

  1. Know you WHY
  2. Visualize your end result
  3. Think about the consequences of taking or NOT taking actions

Passion and Purpose

If you are not sure of your purpose or passion there are questions and steps to help you figure it out.

Attitude

Zaheen goes through and explains the 5 traits of a positive attitude:

  1. Optimism
  2. Sense of Humor
  3. Flexibility
  4. Embrace Change
  5. Realistic

Relationship Skills

I love the acronym LIMP that is explained in this key for resiliency. LIMP stands for:

Listen, Intention, Match and mirror, Perspective

Appreciation

Resilient people get worried and overwhelmed just like everyone else, but what makes the difference that is explained in this key, is the subconscious step of appreciation that resilient people implement. This one thing completely changes the challenges that they face and makes them feel more helpful.

Beliefs

Learn how to change your self limiting beliefs by first learning how to identify them and then by becoming consciously aware of them. This can be hard to do but it is one of the most powerful ways to overcome challenges and struggles.

About the Author

People who don’t know Zaheen’s background sometimes assume that achieving success was easy for her. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Her first challenge began around age 5, when an incident left her with a speech impediment-stuttering. As she got accustomed to the people around her in Kenya and they got accustomed to her speech, another change occurred at the age of 15 – her parents sent her to Canada to create better educational opportunities, but this move made her speech even worse; she lost confidence in herself and found comfort in food. Even after going through speech therapy in her twenties, Zaheen wasn’t cured, but this was the stepping stone to finding her VOICE.

As Zaheen completed her education in Nutrition & Food Science and Environmental Health, she became determined to understand the source of her speech impediment because it had such an impact on things she wanted to do but felt she couldn’t. Using her strategies to embrace fear rather than run from it, she slowly started her transformation.

While balancing her family, Zaheen has created a successful health and wellness business and simultaneously acquired 3 rental properties within a span of less than 36 months. Not only an entrepreneur, Zaheen is also the author of an award-winning book on behavior weight loss which won a bronze at the Global E-book Awards and was featured in the top 10 in Women Business Owners Today E-zine . Her system of transformation and excellence is grounded in building your resilience muscle which is the daily practice of the three R’s – Release, Reprogram and Resolve. She offers an array of time-tested techniques and powerful principles to propel her clients toward their definitions of success
