Ignorance is not Bliss when it comes to online security and protection. Hackers and malware is not only for the large, multimillion dollar companies. It can affect anyone, anywhere.

It is conference season for me and I have attended two conferences in the last three weeks. And I am attending another one next week.  I have found that my mobile service is not always the greatest when attending conferences so I end up relying on public Wi-Fi. I need it to be able to send emails, live Tweet events and sessions and for sharing photos. I travel with multiple devices (Nexus 9 tablet and Xperia Z3 smartphone), so I end up connecting both of them to public Wi-Fi all the time.

Why is that a problem you ask? Watch this short video to find out.

How often do you connect to public Wi-Fi without giving it a second thought? At your local coffee shop? At the airport? In a hotel? (Check the saved Wi-Fi locations on your smartphone to see. You may be surprised.)

How Do You Protect Yourself Online?

I have been using F-Secure Freedome. Freedome is a combination of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service and malware protection for your iOS, Mac, Windows or Android device.  (A VPN is a secure, encrypted connection between you and another computer or Internet device).

It sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is to set up and use. Download the app from your favorite store, follow the quick and short tutorial, turn it on and you are set up within minutes.

F-Secure Freedome encrypts your traffic, it has no backdoors, and it does not log, share or sell your data.

F-Secure Freedome Features:

This is what F-Secure Freedome looks like on your screen when it is on. You can see how it protects you.

I will update this picture throughout my Freedome campaign so that you can see how it is helping protect my phone and provide me with peace of mind.

When you have the app open you can touch any of the circular rings (F-Secure Freedome calls them layers), to view the different layers of protection: traffic protected, sites blocked, tracking attempts blocked and how many apps are secured. Freedome also includes an always-on free anti-virus that scans your device for malware, spyware and other harmful apps.

Here are screenshots explaining how each layer of the F-Secure Freedome works:
